Velocity Ultra – handheld shoot ’em up goodness

Developer/Publisher: Futurlab Released: May 2013

Played on: PS Vita (also available on PC)

I used to love shoot ‘em ups at the arcade, but have never been engaged by one on consoles or handhelds, aside from the odd Space Invaders remake. So it was this sad gap of quality shoot ‘em ups in my life that PS+ filled with a free digital copy of Velocity Ultra.

A remake of a Playstation Mini game, Velocity Ultra is a fast paced space shooter that utilises the Vita’s twin sticks and touch screen perfectly. More than just shooting and bombing, the game features a teleportation mechanic that allows for some inventive level design and split-second reflex challenges. Some switch-based puzzles and lots of collectibles make for a well-rounded package and the best shoot ‘em up I’d played in years.

Verdict: Tight, well-designed, challenging and endlessly replayable. Velocity Ultra kicks arse.

Should Bradley play this: If you’ve got a hankering for a shoot ‘em up and a controller for your PC, do it. I have no idea how well the teleport stuff will work without the touch screen though.
