As I mentioned last year, I loved Mass Effect 3 despite the divisive ending, but was satisfied enough with it to ignore subsequent DLC. Citadel, however, is an indulgent love letter to fans of the series, reuniting all the characters you’ve got to know over the last 3 games like a 90’s sitcom finale or reunion show. And if you’re a Mass Effect fan, its quite a treat!
Citadel is refreshingly well written with a keen self-aware sense of humour, almost to a fault. While there is a fun little action quest in here, the highlight of the game is throwing a huge party at the end where every one of your companions from the last 3 games (who have survived, anyway) get together and get progressively drunk. Wandering around, listening in on conversations, reflecting on the 90+ hours of gaming you’ve put into the series thus far is a fun, almost nostalgic experience. And of course because your decisions and saved games have carried over, the people present and their relationships to each other will be unique for different users.
The narrative of Citadel takes place before the ending of Mass Effect 3, but its probably best enjoyed as a separate experience once you’ve completed the regular game, as it would be a strange diversion that would ruin the flow of the main questline.
Verdict: If you’re a fan of the series and have completed all 3 games, this is well worth checking it out! If you’re only a casual visitor to the Mass Effect universe, stick with the main games.
Should Bradley play this: Yes. He should play all 3 Mass Effect games, take a little break, then play Citadel.
